Why SassiNiemand Is Beginning to Advocate for Nature Through Art

I recently came across a phrase that immediately resonated with me: ecological misanthropy. It describes the growing sadness many people feel when they see humanity placing short-term gain ahead of the natural world. Although the term itself is new to me, the feeling is not. Nature has always been at the heart of my work, and over time I have found myself asking an increasingly important question. If my artwork celebrates the beauty of wildlife, plants and the landscapes that inspire me, shouldn’t it also encourage people to value and protect them? And shouldn’t my work advocate for nature through art too?

Nature Has Always Been My Greatest Inspiration

Long before I began licensing artwork or selling products online, I was drawn to the extraordinary beauty and diversity of the natural world. Whether it is the intricate markings on a butterfly’s wings, the elegant curve of a seashell, the quiet strength of an ancient tree or the rich colours of African wildlife, nature has always provided an endless source of inspiration for my sketchbook.

As a surface pattern designer, I spend countless hours observing the details that often go unnoticed. The rhythm of leaves, the delicate textures of feathers, the intricate geometry of flowers and the remarkable patterns that have evolved over millions of years all find their way into my work. Every collection begins with curiosity, careful observation and a deep appreciation for the world around me.

My phone is living proof of that curiosity. It is filled with thousands of photographs of flowers, individual petals, bees disappearing headfirst into tubular blooms with only their tiny furry backsides visible, unexpected fungi on woodland walks and even the occasional cow that seems to have paused just long enough to wink at me. They may look like an eclectic collection to everyone else, but each one captures a fleeting moment of beauty, character or inspiration that might one day find its way into a future design.

That connection to nature is also reflected in my business. My slogan, Inspired by Nature, Made with Love, has guided SassiNiemand from the very beginning. It represents not only where my creative ideas come from, but also the care, respect and genuine affection I hope to bring to every collection I create.

When Inspiration No Longer Feels Enough

For many years, creating artwork inspired by nature felt like enough. Every new collection became my own way of celebrating the extraordinary beauty, diversity and resilience of the natural world.

Over time, however, I have found myself asking a different question. If the landscapes, wildlife and ecosystems that inspire my work are increasingly under pressure, can art do more than simply reflect their beauty? Can it also encourage people to value, appreciate and help protect them?

This isn’t an entirely new way of thinking. Looking back, there have been moments over the years that quietly pointed me in this direction, from submitting artwork for consideration in support of the Sea Change Project to being deeply moved by My Octopus Teacher, the remarkable documentary created by the same South African conservation storytelling organisation. More recently, Remarkably Bright Creatures once again reminded me of the remarkable intelligence and beauty of the natural world. Together, these experiences helped reignite a desire to ensure my own artwork does more than celebrate nature. I want it to help advocate for it too.

That realisation has become the foundation for a new chapter in my creative journey, one that marks the beginning of what I hope SassiNiemand will become: a creative business that advocates for nature through art.

A New Direction for SassiNiemand

This new direction doesn’t change what I create. Nature will always be my greatest source of inspiration, and I will continue designing the collections that bring me joy, from botanical florals and wildlife to coastal themes and African-inspired patterns.

What is changing is the purpose behind more of that work.

Over time, I want to develop artwork and carefully selected products that not only celebrate the beauty of the natural world but also advocate for its protection. Through these Art for Nature designs, I hope to raise awareness, share stories that encourage a greater appreciation of wildlife and habitats, and use my platform to shine a light on the remarkable species that inspire so many of my collections. As part of this wider commitment, SassiNiemand will also make voluntary donations from artist earnings to carefully chosen conservation organisations and projects.

I also want this website to become a place where creativity and conservation meet. Alongside new collections, I’ll be sharing more of the stories behind my artwork, celebrating the wildlife, plants and habitats that inspire my designs, and exploring the conservation projects and organisations working to protect them.

This is very much the beginning of the journey, and I know it will continue to evolve over time. My hope is that every small step, whether through a design, a story or giving something back to conservation, will help encourage a deeper appreciation for the natural world and remind us that even small actions can make a meaningful difference.

To celebrate this new chapter, each monthly blog will now include a Nature Notes feature, sharing a little more about the wildlife, plants, habitats and conservation stories that inspire my artwork. I hope these small moments of discovery encourage you to look a little more closely at the natural world around you, because inspiration often begins with simply paying attention.

Helping Wildlife Through a Summer Heatwave

As I write this, much of England is experiencing another prolonged spell of hot, dry weather. While we often think about keeping ourselves and our pets hydrated, it’s easy to forget that birds, bees, butterflies and other garden wildlife are searching for water too.

One of the simplest and most effective ways to help is by placing a shallow dish or bird bath outside and refilling it daily with fresh, clean water. Even a small bowl can make an enormous difference.

Adding a few pebbles or larger stones creates safe landing places for bees, butterflies and other insects, allowing them to drink without the risk of drowning. Birds will also appreciate the shallow edges for drinking and bathing, helping them keep their feathers clean and in good condition during the warmer months.

If you already provide food for garden birds, remember that fresh water is often even more important during hot weather. Cleaning bird baths and feeders regularly, and replacing the water each day, also helps reduce the spread of disease.

Sometimes the smallest acts of kindness have the greatest impact. A simple bowl of fresh water may become a welcome lifeline for the wildlife that shares our gardens, reminding us that caring for nature often begins with the simplest of gestures.
