Starting Fresh in the Studio | Behind the Scenes | SassiNiemand

January has a funny way of making everyone feel like they need to start the year at full speed, with huge goals, brand new routines, and a perfectly organised life by week two. I’m not sure who decided that … but I’m choosing a gentler version of “starting fresh” this year.

We recently had a proper cold spell that froze the rainwater and sleet across our slate stone patio, turning it into what can only be described as a surprise ice rink. Watching our Labrador attempt to cross it was both slightly alarming and genuinely impressive. She very cautiously ice-skated her way to the grass with the kind of focus you’d expect from a professional athlete, and then, even more gingerly, made her way back to the door again. For an old gal, it was a solid display of skill … and a reminder that sometimes the best approach is slow, careful, and steady.

That’s exactly the energy I’m taking into the studio this January.

A Gentle January Reset (Without the Pressure)

Instead of setting big stressful resolutions, I’ve been focusing on quieter “fresh start” improvements that make everyday life easier, both creatively and practically. I’ve been thinking more about what supports my creativity long-term, and less about what looks impressive on a checklist.

Sometimes a fresh start isn’t about doing more. It’s about making space, simplifying things, and choosing a rhythm you can actually stick to.

The RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch (A January Tradition I Love)

Collage showing an RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch tally sheet, an Admiral Snacks hoodie fundraiser, and a Backyard Birds cushion design by SassiNiemand

I’m also taking part in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch again this year, which will be my second year doing my hour of watching and recording the birds that visit our garden. It’s one of those small January traditions I genuinely look forward to, and it’s a simple reminder that there’s so much life and movement outside even in the middle of winter.

It also feels especially meaningful at the moment because my Admiral Snacks hoodie on TeeMill is raising funds for bird welfare right now, so it’s a lovely example of how my work and my real life sometimes connect.

And it always makes me smile how quickly these moments turn into creative inspiration too. I have a design called Backyard Birds (From My Window) that was originally inspired by birds from the USA, but the idea came from the same simple habit I still love today, noticing what’s outside, paying attention to small details, and letting nature quietly lead the way.

January Pick-Me-Up Mocktail (Ginger + Honey Citrus Fizz)

Because January can feel long (and winter can feel even longer), I thought I’d add a small seasonal pick-me-up to this post too. Nothing fancy, nothing overly “wellness-y”… just a simple drink that makes slow winter days feel a little brighter.

Ingredients (serves 1):

  • Fresh ginger (a few thin slices, or 1–2 tsp grated)
  • 1–2 tsp honey (to taste)
  • Juice of ½ lemon (or lemon + a splash of orange)
  • Sparkling water
  • Ice
  • Optional: pinch of cinnamon, sprig of rosemary, or a slice of orange

Method:

  1. Add the ginger and honey to a glass and stir well (or muddle gently).
  2. Add lemon juice and a handful of ice.
  3. Top with sparkling water and stir lightly.
  4. Taste and adjust: more honey for comfort, more lemon for zing.
  5. Add rosemary or citrus if you want it to feel extra special.

This is one of those small “studio rituals” that doesn’t try to change your entire life… it just makes the moment you’re in feel a little nicer.

Optional shortcut (my January favourite):
If you’d rather keep things simple, I’ve also been loving a locally made non-alcoholic ginger aperitif called Mother Root. It’s a UK-made drink with that bold ginger warmth, and it makes an easy January “pick-me-up” when topped with sparkling water and a slice of lemon. (Not sponsored, just genuinely a new winter favourite.)

A Small Note for the Year Ahead

As the year unfolds, I’d love to create a small collection of illustrated recipe cards and stationery pieces like this too, but for now I’m happy to share the recipe in a simple form so you can enjoy it straight away. If I do release a decorated printable version later on, I’ll share it here.

If you’re starting this year gently as well, I hope this is your reminder that slow progress still counts. Quiet resets still matter. And sometimes the most productive thing you can do is make your life easier, one small step at a time… ideally without having to ice skate across your patio to do it.

If you’d like to browse my updated site, you can explore the Collections page or head to Applications to see my patterns on wallpaper, fabric, home décor and accessories.

Wishing you a calm, cosy start to the year ahead.
